History of the Cinnamon Roll

The history of the cinnamon roll is a tale that dates back centuries and has undergone various transformations across different cultures. While the exact origin remains a bit hazy, this delectable pastry has left a trail of breadcrumbs throughout history.

Evidence suggests that the use of cinnamon in cooking dates back to ancient Egypt as far as 2000 BCE. However, the idea of a rolled cinnamon dough likely developed later.

The modern cinnamon roll, as we know it today, is believed to have its roots in Sweden. During the 17th century, Sweden established significant trade routes with countries like Turkey and Persia, where cinnamon was widely available. Swedish bakers started incorporating cinnamon into their pastries, and by the 18th century, the cinnamon bun became a popular treat in Sweden.

The concept of cinnamon rolls continued to spread across Europe over the centuries. In the United States, Scandinavian immigrants brought their traditional recipes with them in the 19th and 20th centuries, leading to the cinnamon roll’s popularity in American cuisine. In the 1920s, renowned chef and cookbook author Irma Rombauer featured a recipe for cinnamon rolls in her famous cookbook, “The Joy of Cooking,” further solidifying their place in American kitchens.

Here’s a fun fact about cinnamon rolls: The iconic smell of cinnamon rolls baking in the oven can be so enticing that it has been scientifically proven to trigger positive memories and enhance cognitive function!

The smell of cinnamon has been found to stimulate brain activity, particularly in the areas associated with memory and attention. This phenomenon has even led to studies exploring the use of cinnamon scent in environments like schools and workplaces to improve focus and productivity.

Today, the cinnamon roll has become a beloved and iconic pastry enjoyed worldwide. Various regional variations and adaptations can be found, each with its own unique twist on the classic treat. Whether served as a breakfast pastry, dessert, or a Cinnamon Roll Martini…. the cinnamon roll continues to be a timeless delight that warms hearts and satisfies sweet cravings everywhere.

Make it into a Cinnamon Roll Martini, please!

Let’s get into the main event: The Cinnamon Roll Martini! One of our founders of Smokeshow loves cinnamon rolls! Seriously, he can eat them non-stop. So, when he tried the Cinnamon Roll Martini, he about finished it in one sip!

To start, we added Rumchata to our cocktail shaker. Rumchata is a popular creamy liqueur known for its rich, smooth, and sweet flavor profile. It is made with a blend of Caribbean rum, real dairy cream, cinnamon, vanilla, and a few other secret ingredients that give it a distinctive taste.

The combination of rum and cream creates a luscious and indulgent drink that is often likened to the taste of liquid cinnamon toast or horchata, a traditional Mexican rice-based beverage with cinnamon. This unique flavor profile has made RumChata a favorite choice for cocktails and a delightful addition to coffee, hot chocolate, and desserts.

Due to its versatility and delicious taste, Rumchata has gained a devoted following and is used as a key ingredient in various cocktail recipes. It can be enjoyed on its own, over ice, or mixed with other spirits and ingredients to create a wide range of delightful concoctions.

Next up is Kahlua!

Kahlua is a well-known coffee-flavored liqueur that originates from Mexico. It is made by blending rum, arabica coffee beans, sugar, and vanilla to create a rich and smooth liqueur with a distinct coffee flavor and a hint of sweetness.

The name “Kahlua” is derived from the Nahuatl word “kah-lu-ah,” which translates to “House of the Acolhua people,” an ancient indigenous group from Mexico. The production of Kahlua began in the mid-20th century, and it quickly gained popularity both in Mexico and internationally.

Due to its delicious coffee taste and versatility, Kahlua has become a popular ingredient in a wide range of cocktails and mixed drinks. Some of the most famous cocktails made with Kahlúa include the White Russian, Black Russian, Espresso Martini, and Mudslide.

In addition to being used in cocktails, Kahlua can also be enjoyed on its own, over ice, or mixed with milk, cream, or other spirits to create delightful coffee-inspired beverages. Its smooth and sweet flavor makes it a popular choice for those who enjoy the combination of coffee and liqueur.

Finally, add some heavy cream to give the cocktail creaminess and balance the other two flavors!

Now, the fun part- let’s smoke the cocktail with cinnamon smoke dust! The cinnamon will bring out more of the cinnamon flavor from the Rumchata and enhance the overall feel of the cocktail! We also filmed this for our Youtube Channel which you can find here!
