What is a Paloma?

A Paloma is a popular cocktail that originated in Mexico. It is typically made with tequila and grapefruit soda, such as Jarritos or Squirt. The word “paloma” actually means “dove” in Spanish. The cocktail is known for its refreshing and citrusy flavor.

The basic recipe includes tequila, grapefruit soda, lime juice, and salt. It is usually served over ice in a highball glass with a salt-rimmed rim. Some variations of the Paloma may include the addition of simple syrup or agave nectar to sweeten the drink.

The exact origin of the Paloma cocktail is not entirely clear, but it is believed to have originated in Mexico. The Paloma has been a popular drink in Mexico for decades and is often considered the country’s national cocktail, alongside the Margarita.

The earliest known references to the Paloma cocktail date back to the mid-20th century. It is said that the cocktail gained popularity in the 1950s when tequila producers in Mexico started promoting it as an alternative to the Margarita, which was gaining popularity in the United States. The Paloma’s simple recipe and refreshing taste made it a hit among locals and tourists alike.

Traditionally, the Paloma is made with tequila and grapefruit soda. The use of grapefruit soda sets it apart from other tequila-based cocktails that typically use citrus juices like lime or lemon. The combination of tequila’s earthy and agave flavors with the tartness of grapefruit creates a unique and refreshing drink.

Over the years, variations of the Paloma have emerged. Some people prefer to use fresh grapefruit juice instead of grapefruit soda, while others may add additional ingredients like simple syrup or agave nectar to sweeten the cocktail. However, the basic elements of tequila and grapefruit remain constant.

Today, the Paloma is enjoyed both in Mexico and around the world. It has gained popularity as a refreshing and easy-to-make cocktail, often served at parties, bars, and Mexican-themed establishments. Its reputation continues to grow, and it has become a beloved classic cocktail among tequila enthusiasts and those looking for a taste of Mexico’s vibrant drinking culture.
