They Call me Old Fashioned

If you are new to Old Fashioneds or just enjoy learning fun facts for your next party, let me give some backstory on Old Fashioneds! If you already know about Old Fashioneds, feel free to skip through this part!

The exact origin of the Old Fashioned cocktail is somewhat disputed, as the drink has been around for well over a century and its history has become somewhat shrouded in legend. However, it is generally agreed that the cocktail originated in the late 19th century, and was originally known as the “whiskey cocktail”.

At this time, the whiskey cocktail was a simple drink consisting of whiskey, sugar, water, and bitters. Over time, variations on the drink emerged, with some bartenders adding citrus peels, liqueurs, or other flavorings to the mix.

The term “old fashioned” is thought to have come into use in the early 20th century, and was used to describe the original whiskey cocktail made in an old-fashioned way, with sugar, water, bitters, and whiskey. The term eventually came to be associated specifically with the bourbon or rye whiskey version of the cocktail, which is now the most common form of the drink.

Today, the Old Fashioned remains a classic cocktail that is enjoyed by whiskey lovers around the world. Whether made with bourbon or rye whiskey and with or without the addition of fruit or other flavorings, the Old Fashioned continues to be a beloved staple of the cocktail world.

The Smokeshow Cocktail

For the Smokeshow Cocktail, we are smoking everythaaaang!! We are raking the basics of an Old Fashioned and turning those into a smoky delight! From the simple syrup to the ice, get ready for a smoky drink!

Let’s start from the top. You’ll, of course, need your Smokeshow Cocktail Smoker! You’ll need it for quite a few of the steps!

In order to get started, it is necessary to prepare smoked ice at least 24 hours before. Select an ice mold of your preference and a large mixing glass. Add water to the mixing glass and layer it with smoke. It is crucial to layer the smoke so that it can infiltrate into every layer of the water, allowing the smoky taste to enhance the ice as it melts.

First, we are going to make the smoked simple syrup. Simple syrup is fairly easy to make. You will need to combine one cup of sugar with one cup of water over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Once fully combined and all sugar is dissolved, transfer to a heat-safe container, BUT WAIT! We need to SMOKE it! Make sure the opening to the container is wide enough for the smoker to fit on top. Smoke the simple syrup with the smoke dust of your choice. Once the smoker is removed, quickly put a lid on the container to trap in some of that smoky flavor! Set aside!

Once your ice has frozen, you are ready to make your Smokeshow Old Fashioned! First, smoke the bourbon in a mixing glass. Leave the smoker on to let the smoker percolate inside of the glass.

Firstly, select the rocks glass you prefer and place the smoked ice cube into it. Proceed to pour in the smoked simple syrup and smoked bourbon. Add a few dashes of angostura bitters. Lastly, give the drink a final touch of smoke to enhance the overall smoky experience.
