Orange Marmalade Whiskey Sour

“ORANGE YOU GLAD IT’S A WHISKEY SOUR??”

What is a Whiskey Sour?

A Whiskey Sour is a classic cocktail that has been enjoyed for over a century. It’s a simple yet delicious drink made with whiskey, lemon juice, and sugar. The cocktail is typically served over ice and garnished with a cherry and/or an orange slice.

The history of the Whiskey Sour is a bit unclear, but it’s believed to have originated in the mid-1800s. It was a popular drink among sailors, who used lime juice instead of lemon and added water to make the drink more refreshing. Over time, the recipe evolved to include lemon juice and sugar, and it became a staple in bars and restaurants around the world.

During Prohibition in the United States, the Whiskey Sour became even more popular, as whiskey was one of the few spirits that could still be legally produced for medicinal purposes. Bartenders would often disguise their whiskey sours as “medicinal tonics,” serving them with a dose of lemon juice and sugar to make them more palatable.

In the modern day, there are many variations from varying flavor profiles, adding smoke (hehe that’s us), and often, sours are served with a foamy egg white! Some Whiskey Sours are made with an egg white, which gives the cocktail a creamy, frothy texture and a slightly richer flavor. The addition of egg white is a classic technique used in many cocktails, including the popular Gin Fizz. Here is a recipe on how to include the foamy egg white by Sauder’s Eggs: How to Make a Cocktail With Egg White. Make sure you read through that article to ensure you are doing it the safest way!

The Whiskey Sour has maintained its popularity as a favored cocktail among whiskey enthusiasts worldwide. It’s a timeless beverage that can be effortlessly concocted at home and personalized to cater to individual taste buds.

How is this Whiskey Sour Different?

We have made a smoked whiskey sour before, but the classic way. Usually, it has simple syrup, but for this one, we are omitting that step. The sweetness will come from the orange marmalade! It’s sweet and just a bit tangy, so it pairs well with the sourness from the lemons and will cut the sour taste by just a bit. You can certainly adjust how much of the marmalade you add to the cocktail depending on how much of the sweetness you prefer! So, if your guests prefer more sour, use 1 tablespoon of the marmalade and if they need a bit more sweetness, add 2 tablespoons.

Finally, let’s cut the sweetness and the sourness with SMOKE! Smoke and the citrus go so well together, it’s almost a crime to not let them live harmoniously! I have two options of smoke dust for you to pair with this cocktail: Lemon Peel or Bourbon Barrel. Now, if you want to amp up the lemon-flavor, choose Lemon Peel. You’ll get a bit of a sour smell on the nose and taste that sourness throughout the cocktail. If you use Bourbon Barrel, that bourbon flavor of the cocktail will be pumped up!
